Restorative Yoga is a practice dedicated to deeply nourishing the body through mindfully resting the body and mind. The practice focuses on "being" rather than doing. An extensive range of yoga props(blocks, blankets, straps and bolsters) can be used to create a fully supported practice allowing the body to unwind passively and the mind to move towards stillness.

What is Restorative Yoga?

The body is held in the safety of a still and usually quiet room with props including bolsters, blocks, and blankets. This practice enhances the body's natural healing abilities to restore more efficiently and dissolves the residue of everyday stress. Restorative yoga poses are not about stretching the body, they are about opening to collect nourishment. Restorative Yoga is for anyone and can be a real good start into the yoga world.
It is of no surprise that the practice of Restorative Yoga is part of a growing body of evidence that reports myriad beneficial effects among those who suffer from PTSD. From decreased heart rate, lowered blood pressure, enhanced immune function and a reduction in depression and anxiety, survivors of trauma are discovering the healing power of yoga.
Recent studies also hint at Restorative Yoga’s ability to reduce stress and improve memory function and to improve the cognitive functioning of elderly nursing home residents. One multifaceted program that used meditation and restorative yoga succeeded in reversing some memory loss. Additionally, a small trial program in the UK that offered gentle yoga to caregivers and dementia sufferers together was both feasible for and well-received by participants.
Supported Reclining Twist Pose
Props: 1 Rectangle Bolster
1 Blanket Square Fold, under head
Variations: Face down
Other ear down
Sandbag on back of pelvis
Hold Twist for 5-7 minutes on each side
Setup: Bring upper body up, shift knees to left of bolster, rotate torso to right and release back down over bolster. Initially turn head to right. repeat on opposite side.
Purpose of the pose: Creates a counter pressure on the abdomen, relieves tension and stretches the lower back. All the emotional measures of stress are reduced; fatigue is diminished. Evokes a sense of security. Pose of introversion, curling up and reconnecting with feeling of support and release.

With Rheumatoid Arthritis it is really important to try and have a daily exercise practice. We encourage movement through yoga as this can truly help reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. Restorative Yoga allows our Body, Mind, and Soul to unwind and creates internal peace and awareness. It is a slow practice that nourishes the body and allows it to deeply relax in postures that are often held around 5 minutes or more.
Just waking up and taking the first steps out of bed in the morning can be extremely painful for RA sufferers. Through movement and exercise the joints can ease in discomfort and slowly gain more flexion. These calming yoga postures also allow the body to move away from the fight or flight mode associated with incessant pain and step into an inner calm and a refreshed state. This calmer state in turn helps to improve digestion, which is heavily compromised in most people with RA.
Supported Bound Angle Pose
Props: 1 Rectangle Bolster
2 Blanket: 2 Long Rolls, 2 Skinny Rectangles,
1 Square Fold
Variations: Use less under ribs. Head wrap or eye pillows. Sandbags on arms and/or inner thighs
Hold pose for 10 minutes
Setup: Rectangular blanket supporting length of spine or bolster, additional blanket under head. Either rolled blanket over feet & tucked under legs or strap binding feet together. Blankets under arms.
Purpose of the pose: This is one of the most important poses in the restorative series. Opens chest, abdominals, pelvis; allows for deep opening with safety & support. Helps with high BP (blood pressure), menstruation, menopause.

Yoga is very effective in treating Varicose Veins It helps in alleviating pain and also prevents future attacks. Yoga stretching and relaxation techniques can be particularly beneficial for varicose veins. Certain positions, such this Restorative Yoga pose Legs Up The Wall promoting circulation and the drainage of blood from the legs. The deep-breathing exercises in yoga may further alleviate discomfort by getting more oxygen into the bloodstream. yoga is an effective protocol for preventing and treating varicose veins. The posture that is known to be clinically most effective in both cases is Sarvangasana, the Shoulder Stand. Where the legs are inverted and the pressure of gravity is reversed. In this pose, the blood and the lymph drain from the lower extremities back to the heart, thereby reducing the pressure of the pooled blood in the veins. Do this pose once daily. With recommended holding time of about 3 to 5 minutes. This supported Legs Up The Wall Pose (shown in photo) is a good beginner start. Shoulder Stands take a lot of practice time, along with guidance from a trained Yoga Guru (teacher). When you stand up, movement of these fluids in the legs is greatly improved. There are many yoga breathing exercise, which can be immensely helpful in reducing varicose veins and is particularly helpful in preventing them from getting worse.

Variations: Elevate only hips, less high
Eye pillow, Sandbags on feet
Legs wide (support with strap)

Setup: Start in legs up the wall, no props other than mat. Press feet into wall and slide bolster and 1 rectangular blanket under sacrum. Place additional blankets under head. Optional, bind thighs with strap.
Purpose of the pose: This pose is called the Great Rejuvenator, reduces swelling and fatigue legs. Enhances health of circulatory system. Neutralizes the body. Opens and quits your mind.
Remain present to your breath and bodily sensations.

Telling an abuse victim, especially a victim who has PTSD and a history of abuse, to "let it go," is, quite frankly, one of the most selfish and ignorant things you can do.
Remember, any event that is traumatic-even if it seems small to you-may have triggered a lifetime's worth of memories for this person. Saying, "I am here for you," or "I may not know what you're going through, but I see and hear your pain and want to help" are much healthier alternatives. As survivors,
we have the distinct disadvantage of being alienated and misunderstood.

Trauma leaves survivors suffering from agonizing shame about the actions they took to survive and maintain a connection with the person who abused them.
This compounds the two-fold experience of trauma survivors: emotional numbing through dissociation and forced emotional numbing due to the social norm that we have to "let it go," and "move forward" somehow. These are all very damaging and retraumatizing things for a trauma survivor to hear, as trauma can live in bodies as well as our minds for a lifetime. No one should be allowed to "compare" your trauma to another person's trauma. Everyone reacts to trauma differently and each reaction is valid based on the trauma and its impact on that person. Society must unlearn this idea that we should "get over" trauma as this only adds to the effects of emotional numbing and repression that causes so much damage to our hearts, minds and bodies.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga
Trauma can change your brain, leaving the survivor in a place of total darkness. Trauma can leave you isolated, leaving the survivor so lost and so disconnected from the world. Trauma causes depression and anxiety, leaving the survivor feeling totally out of control of their body, mind and soul. Trauma sensitive yoga is a non-assist class specifically designed for people who have experienced emotional or physical trauma. Leslii Stevens is there to provide a safe and professional guidance. These classes are designed so that the students are in control over what they are doing with their body at all times. Studio 23 is a small safe environment, making this class and space more comfortable for those individuals who find it difficult to be in big groups. Self care is the first step in recovery. Yoga reshapes our body, mind & soul and helps the survivor of trauma to heal from their injuries.

Does your skincare stash include a clay mask? If not, you’re missing out! Not only does clay naturally purify your skin, but it works on all skin types and lasts forever so you can use it more than just a one-and-done sheet mask. While my go-to mask is one you can find at any health food store, I like to add my own spin to it—and utilize my coconut bowl and spoon for mixing so everything is metal-free!
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons of healing clay
- 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of water
Directions:
- In a non-metal bowl, mix equal parts clay with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and water. If it is still thick and has powder clumps in it add a bit more water or if its too runny add a bit more clay.
- Combine until mask has a creamy consistency and spread ½ to ¼ inch layer on to your clean face.
- For sensitive skin, let the mask dry for 5 to 10 minutes. For normal skin, let dry for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Remove clay mask by washing your face with warm water. Apply for favorite face moisturizer and enjoy your smooth skin!
- If you have extra, trying using the clay farther down your neck, or even on your underarms for a refreshing detox!

After spending five months on strict bedrest at the age of 37, expecting my very first child, I went into labor five weeks early. Nothing about this pregnancy was normal. Back at only 10 weeks into this adventure, I was pinned “High-Risk Pregnancy.” I did everything I could to make sure both my unborn child and I were safe.
With a little over a month more to go, my daughter wanted out and both our lives were in danger. So, my daughter came into this world in the most traumatic way ever and I am so very grateful to have been at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA! I ended up in two life-saving surgeries that day that landed my ass in the ICU hooked up to a ventilator. I woke up strapped down with a tube down my throat. The experience was so disorienting and confusing as hell. I was pretty much very scared, I didn’t know what time it was, and, most scary, I wasn’t sure what was coming next. I had no idea how my newborn child was or even where she was. I didn’t know if I was getting better or if I was going to die again or if I would always be living on a ventilator.
When the ventilator was finally removed, I began getting past that very painful feeling. I was very groggy and the room I had been in felt very strange and different than before. Nothing was really making any sense at all. The road to recovery was just starting and I was about to begin a very hard, and very long journey.

I have side effects that have impacted my daily life not just from the ventilator itself but also from the drugs used when a person goes on a ventilator. Doctors call this Post-Intensive Care Syndrome or PICS.
Experiencing PICS is very difficult because it’s unexpected, causing Post-Traumatic Stress, depression, anxiety, brain fog, physical and emotional weakness just to name a few and there’s no clear treatment. These side effects can last a lifetime.
For me personally, dying twice and being on a ventilator has haunted me and now that we are living with the Coronavirus pandemic my fears are even greater. I don’t ever want to be hooked up to another ventilator as long as I live. I am having a very hard time leaving my home to volunteer and help in my community. I live with asthma and RA, which puts me at high risk for the severe illness caused by Covid-19. Covid-19 would be something very tough for me to survive.
I got a second chance in this life and have enjoyed the last 17 years as a gift. I became a Mom, a Touring Concert Photographer, and a Yoga Teacher, all things I never ever imagined. But being a Mom to my daughter is by far the most amazing gift for fighting so hard to live!

Even when we don’t realize it, our body is working towards its natural goal: striving to achieve and maintain balance. While the path itself is different for every person, there are certain things we can ALL do every day to help facilitate our individual journeys.
The Chakras: An ancient perspective on the human energy system.
Through the lens of the seven chakras, we come to see and understand ourselves in a deeper and ever-expanding way. Yoga helps us achieve balance by focusing on each of our energy centers, keeping them open and aligned, and thereby sending a ripple effect of integration through the body, mind, and soul.
My goal is to help you unlock your own personal keys to alignment, and get you onto your path to balance. My teaching will give you permission to find the tools that work best for your body. By using the ancient perspective of the chakras, I aim to teach you simplicity and health for the modern world.
Whether it be gaining freedom from our daily stress and negative thoughts, enjoying the simple liberation of movement, or the ultimate freeing experience of learning and understanding who we really are and what we can be, I have found my path: Working to use my knowledge of yoga, boxing, and meditation to help bring people from all walks of life joy, hope, calmness, and ultimately, balance to our everyday lives.

I Can't Touch My TOES Tuesday Yoga
This class is designed to move students through a variety of standing, sitting, and supine postures. Each class follows some format of centering, breathing exercises, and warming up the body to allow students to go deeper into a sequence of yoga poses. These poses are intended to open the chest, hips, stretch out the back, thighs, and calf muscles while helping to calm the mind and the nervous system. By integrating breath with movement, we begin to balance strength and ease both on and off the mat. This class is appropriate for all levels.

Fascia is the most abundant tissue type within the body, primarily made of collagen. It is what holds and stabilizes our organs, attaches the skin to bones and other tissues and muscles, and separates the muscles from other internal organs. Fascia has the incredible ability to absorb any shock to the system (even when you stub your toe!) and its capacity to withstand trauma is very high. Fascia remembers everything, even when you forget!
Scar tissue itself is built up of layers of fascia, and occurs as a result of physical trauma (either from surgery or similar injury). This density is often what creates a pull on the tissues deep under the skin, which can then in turn cause pain. It’s this pain I aim to help. If you have tissues pulling you in one direction, it can often lead to compensations in other areas; for example a scar on the abdomen can cause the body to contract inwardly, causing a rounding of the shoulders, thus causing a curve in the upper back. This can lead to a myriad of other problems within the body. The good news is, it can be helped! It is NEVER too late to treat an old injury or scar through myofascial release. There can always be improvements.

For many years I experienced both physical and verbal abuse by my husband, the father of my children. It was something I always hid. I felt that I was the only one who was wrong. My abuse was something that I lived every day and I was completely blind. I took Domestic Violence classes and only saw it as a problem of others.
In 2021, I entered a domestic violence shelter. There I was introduce to yoga. It was the first time I moved my body in that way and the very first time I slowed down my life and really started the hard work of digging deep into my being to express the feelings I had inside. Initially, I was confused about what all the feelings meant. One night, while meditating and thinking about the classes, I felt a great tranquility that was hard to explain. It was then that my dream was born to one day teach this class. While I continued to live in the same house with my abuser, I found refuge in the yoga classes. Fight for my soul Yoga with Leslii helped me get my most profound feelings out. I remember when I first sat down on that very first yoga mat not understanding why I was even here, questioning it all and in walked this very friendly, very happy looking yoga teacher, Leslii Stevens. Right away she had me hanging onto every word that came out of her mouth and that one-hour class was over in no time. I had tears coming down my cheeks and my yoga mat was wet. I had no idea why I was crying all I knew was I felt like the weight of the world was released from me. The next day I felt great, and my body and mind was wanting to be back in that yoga class. I cried a lot in those first 6 weeks going to yoga. I think my heart moved my entire being in those first few weeks of yoga classes trying to show me that I needed to love me first.
Once, when I was separated from my abuser, he swore to me that he had changed, so I went back to him again. I returned with hope, only to go back to more suffering. But thanks to my yoga practice, I was no longer the same. His comments affected me less, and I was sure I didn’t trigger or provoke his blows. I knew it was he who could not control himself.
Without my yoga practice, I would still be lost. I would be without hope, resigned to continue believing that the situation I was in was normal and what I deserved. When I left the abusive relationship (with my children) for the last time, I knew it was the yoga that had allowed me to let go of my past. It made me responsible for myself, to decide how I wanted to live my life and create a better future with my children.
Leslii helped take away the bandages I wore over my eyes and now I see the light that illuminates my road ahead. Yoga helped me see a world that my abuser would not let me see. Yoga is my voice; through yoga I can shout from the depths of my being; it is freedom! -Liz

Each class follows some format of centering, breathing exercises, and warming up the body to allow students to go deeper into a sequence of yoga poses. These poses are intended to open the chest, hips, stretch out the back, thighs, and calf muscles while helping to calm the mind and the nervous system. By integrating breath with movement, we begin to balance strength and ease both on and off the mat. This class is appropriate for all levels.

Using a band requires coordination and balance so you end up utilizing more muscle groups to stabilize your body.

You can target specific muscle groups or smaller muscles more easily than weights. Resistance is also maintained through every part of the motion resulting in a better range of motion, strength, and more complete stimulation.
